The Acting Chairman of Etsako Central Local Government, Hon. Cephas Yakubu Muhammed, has initiated a market cleaning campaign in Ivhairua Market, Fugar, as part of a broader effort to improve sanitation across the region.
Accompanied by Vice Chairman, Hon. Rosemary Umasor, and Secretary to the Local Government, Professor Jerome Ileile, Hon. Muhammed emphasised that the initiative would be an on-going exercise across all major markets. He urged residents to adopt proper sanitation habits and take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Muhammed stressed the importance of ensuring a free-flowing drainage system, particularly with the rainy season approaching. He warned against illegal waste disposal, urging market traders and residents to clear drainages in front of their homes and shops to prevent environmental hazards.
In her remarks, Mrs. Christiana Orhewere, Head of the Environmental Department, highlighted the dangers of bush burning and poor hygiene, advocating for daily cleaning routines to promote public health. She called on market traders, particularly women, to prioritise cleanliness in their surroundings.
Mrs. Beauty Umoru, a trader at the market, expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a positive step towards a healthier community. She encouraged fellow traders to embrace the sanitation programme for the collective benefit of all.
In a related development, Hon. Cephas Yakubu Muhammed attended the Wash for Healthy Life (W4HL) Project Dissemination Meeting, where he underscored the importance of clean water and hygiene for community well-being.
Addressing attendees, he emphasised that access to clean water and proper hygiene is fundamental to child health and development. He encouraged participants to take the lessons learned back to their communities, reinforcing that healthy families form the backbone of a thriving society.
The Acting Chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting health initiatives, praising the W4HL team for their dedication to improving the lives of residents.
