Crisis – Plateau NUJ express worries over killings of innocent UNIJOS Students

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council has expressed serious concern over the frequent attacks on students and staff of University of Jos in the challenging security situation bedeviling the state.

This was contained in a statement Jointly signed by Paul Jatau and Peter Amine the Chairman and Secretary of the council .

The union notes with dismay that the University community has become a target for miscreants that do not value human lives and peace killing many innocent and harmless students.

The NUJ therefore calls on security agencies to devise more strategies to protect the University community and indeed other residents of Jos.

The NUJ wants the state government to make concerted efforts to stem the rising cases of violent conflict to include;
The Race Course also known as Fillin Sukuwa on Bauchi Ring Road be converted to a Mobile Police Barracks to protect staff and students on the two campuses of the University.

NUJ further said that Government should, as a matter of urgency, regulate the activities of tricycle operators in Jos and reduce the number of tricycles to 500 with specific registration numbers and designated routes of operation.

“Modalities should be made to compel those who encroached on the University of Jos land be compelled to vacate.”

The statement further reads that Operation Rainbow should build and equip a Security Outpost close to the university like the one being operated at Dutse Uku, in Jos North Local Government.

The NUJ calls on students and staff of the University to be security conscious and provide useful security information to security agencies in the state for prompt action.
