Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has formally dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing the opposition party’s inability to provide Nigerians with credible leadership and meaningful governance.
In a letter addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, and shared publicly via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Melaye announced his immediate resignation from all levels of involvement in the party.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” Melaye stated in the strongly worded letter.
The former senator, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Kogi State during the 2023 elections, said his departure followed deep reflection on the current trajectory of the party.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in its activities or lend my support to her agenda,” he wrote.
Melaye’s resignation, which he described as total and immediate, marks the end of his long-standing affiliation with the PDP. He expressed appreciation to the party for the platform it provided during his years of service but insisted he could no longer continue under the current circumstances.
Shortly after making his resignation public, Melaye declared his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), sparking fresh speculation about his future political ambitions.
The defection comes at a time of increasing instability within the PDP, following closely on the heels of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent exit from the party. Analysts say Melaye’s departure may further weaken the PDP’s position in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Despite leaving the party, Melaye affirmed his continued commitment to the struggle for justice, equity, and national progress, declaring, “My resolve to fight for a better Nigeria remains unwavering.”
His next steps within the ADC are yet to be formally unveiled. However, political observers expect Melaye to play a central role in reshaping the party’s national outlook, particularly in the North Central region.
