A disagreement over the sharing of N94 million reportedly earned through an online scam has turned violent in Okhoro, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, leaving one member of the syndicate hospitalised after being shot.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved suspected internet fraudsters targeting a member of their group, allegedly over his refusal to share the proceeds of their illicit activities.
According to witnesses, the victim, described as an “Aza Man” – a term used to refer to individuals who provide bank accounts for receiving fraudulent funds – was driving his Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) along Okhoro Road when another vehicle intercepted him.
“The gunmen ordered him out of the car and shot him at close range,” said an eyewitness who requested anonymity.
Sources revealed that the victim allegedly withheld the entire N94 million proceeds instead of distributing it as agreed among the group. This breach of trust reportedly led to the violent retaliation.
A local resident familiar with the situation explained: “The victim was supposed to receive a percentage of the money, but instead, he decided to keep the entire amount. This act of betrayal angered the other members of the syndicate.”
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command spokesman, SP Moses Yamu, stated that investigations have commenced to apprehend the perpetrators. He added that the victim is currently receiving medical care at an undisclosed facility.
The police have urged members of the public with useful information to assist in their investigation.
