Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has recused herself from the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following a dramatic courtroom scene on Tuesday.
The trial, which involves terrorism charges brought against Kanu by the federal government, took an unexpected turn when Kanu expressed a lack of confidence in the judge.
According to reports from Infopowerng, during the middle of the proceedings, Kanu abruptly stood up from the dock, interrupting his lawyer, Aloy Ejimako, and insisted on addressing the court himself. In a highly charged moment, Kanu declared that he no longer trusted Justice Nyako and demanded her immediate withdrawal from the case.
Despite objections from the federal government’s lead prosecutor, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, who argued that the trial should proceed based on a Supreme Court ruling, Justice Nyako stood firm in her decision to step down. She stated her preference for another judge to handle the case.
As a result, Justice Nyako recused herself from the trial and ordered that the case file be returned to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, for reassignment to a different judge.
In the aftermath of the hearing, Nnamdi Kanu was returned to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since his re-arrest. The future of the trial now rests on the reassignment of the case.
