Hon Newman Ugiagbe, the Chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Area in Edo State, has dismissed reports of his impeachment, describing the claims as baseless and illegal.
The rumours emerged on Thursday, alleging that two of the council’s twelve councillors, accompanied by unidentified individuals and security personnel, had orchestrated his removal. However, Ugiagbe, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Roy Osariemen, insisted that the attempt holds no legal merit.
In a statement, Ugiagbe clarified: “My purported impeachment as Chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Council is null and void. Ten out of twelve councillors had previously impeached the former leader of the council, who is now unlawfully presenting himself as Acting Chairman. This is a deliberate scheme by the APC to access the council’s treasury without authorisation, and we are prepared to challenge this in court.”
The chairman reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Orhionmwon, highlighting the progress achieved under his administration over the past sixteen months. “I remain the duly elected Chairman and will continue to prioritise good governance and development for our people. We are also eager to collaborate with other levels of government to further our objectives.”
Ugiagbe called on members of the public to denounce the alleged harassment and illegal actions purportedly backed by the APC in the state. He assured residents of his resolve to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the interests of the local government.
