Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has assured Nigerians of collaborative efforts by State governors to tackle rising food prices and achieve nationwide food sufficiency.
Speaking after a New Year’s visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, Governor Okpebholo emphasised the collective resolve of State executives to support the President’s agenda.
The visit, which also included Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the National Assembly leadership, and other state governors, provided an opportunity to discuss the pressing challenges confronting Nigeria. Governor Okpebholo highlighted food security as a priority issue and expressed optimism about the measures already being implemented to address the situation.
“We had extensive discussions about the current food crisis and charted clear solutions to reduce food prices and make food accessible to Nigerians,” he said. “President Tinubu’s passion for the welfare of Nigerians is inspiring, and he has charged us to remain focused on governance and development in the new year.”
Governor Okpebholo revealed that Edo State has allocated over N70 billion in its 2025 budget to address food insecurity. The State’s initiatives include large-scale mechanised farming and interest-free loans for market women to strengthen local food supply chains. These efforts align with President Tinubu’s broader agricultural reforms designed to stabilise food prices across the nation.
Reflecting on the broader challenges facing the country, Governor Okpebholo called for national unity and support for the administration’s policies. “President Tinubu’s reforms are not just timely but necessary. They aim to fix institutional gaps and solve longstanding problems that have hindered our nation’s progress,” he said.
The Governor reassured Nigerians that with State governors working hand-in-hand with the federal government, significant progress would be made in tackling the food crisis and fostering economic stability in the months ahead.
