Two individuals were fatally shot during a crossover night service in Edo State on Wednesday, as residents gathered to usher in the New Year.
The victims were attacked in separate incidents by gunmen believed to be members of a cult. Both attacks reportedly occurred late at night, with the assailants acting without masks.
Uptown Press gathered that, the first incident took place on Iheya Street in Egor Local Government Area, where a middle-aged man was gunned down. Eyewitnesses revealed that the victim sustained severe injuries, with bullets piercing his abdomen and damaging vital organs, including his kidneys. The attackers lingered briefly to ensure the victim had succumbed to his injuries before fleeing the scene in their vehicle.
In a similar incident, another individual was killed in Oluku Community, located in Ovia North East Local Government Area. Details surrounding this second attack remain unclear at this time.
The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Moses Yamu, stated that he is still gathering information on the incidents. “I have not received any official reports on these cases. Efforts are underway to contact the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in those areas for confirmation and further details,” he said.
Residents in the affected communities have expressed fear and concern over the attacks, urging authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property as the New Year begins.
Investigation into the incidents is on-going.
