History will once again be a mandatory subject in Nigerian primary and secondary schools, beginning in 2025, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made the announcement during an interview on Channels Television’s 2024 Year-End Review on 31 December.
The reintroduction comes nearly two decades after History was removed from the basic school curriculum in 2007, a decision that has drawn widespread criticism over the years.
Addressing the significance of the move, Alausa stated, “For too long, Nigerian history has been absent from our schools, leaving a gap in knowledge for many. We now have people in their 30s who are disconnected from their own history—a situation unheard of elsewhere in the world. President Tinubu has taken decisive action to correct this.”
The Minister highlighted that starting in 2025, History will be reinstated across all levels of basic education, including primary schools, junior secondary schools, and senior secondary schools. The initiative aims to reconnect younger generations with the nation’s heritage and foster a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s past.
