In a decisive move to address the growing concern of mentally unstable persons roaming the streets, the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has officially flagged off a statewide exercise to identify, evacuate, and rehabilitate affected individuals.
The exercise was flagged off by the Commissioner, Hon Eugenia Abdallah, who emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring dignity to vulnerable persons while ensuring public safety across the state.
Speaking during the flag-off, Abdallah noted that the initiative is not merely a cleanup effort but a humane intervention aimed at providing care, shelter, and rehabilitation for individuals in need of mental health support. She stressed that the exercise would be conducted with respect for human rights and in line with established social welfare protocols.
The Commissioner further clarified that the operation would not be a one-off exercise, but a sustained effort. According to her, the Ministry will carry out periodic raids across the state to rid the streets of mentally unstable persons loitering in public spaces, while ensuring they receive the necessary treatment and support.
The Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Joy Ihensekhien, alongside staff of the Rehabilitation Department, who are tasked with coordinating the operation and ensuring that those rescued are properly assessed, rehabilitated and reintegrated where possible.
Also speaking, the Director of Rehabilitation, Mr Sylvester Okoeguale, highlighted the importance of the raid as part of a broader strategy to tackle homelessness and mental health challenges in Edo State. He explained that many of those found on the streets require urgent medical attention and structured support systems, which the government is prepared to provide.
Mr Okoeguale further noted that the exercise would be carried out in phases across the three senatorial districts of the state to ensure comprehensive coverage and effective implementation.
The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to protecting vulnerable populations and called on residents to support the initiative by reporting cases and cooperating with officials during the operation.
