CCTV cameras should no longer be treated as a luxury but as a necessary security measure,Justice Terry Momodu Aigbona of the State Special Criminal Court said, urging residents and business owners to install them in strategic locations
as part of efforts to combat crime.

The judge made the call on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, in Benin City, while sentencing four persons convicted of kidnapping to death by hanging.

According to the judge, the footage provided useful evidence that assisted the police in identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the crime.

He said CCTV cameras should no longer be regarded as a luxury but as an important security measure in an era when criminals are adopting increasingly sophisticated methods.

“In this age where crime has become sophisticated, I encourage all residents of Edo State to endeavour to acquire and install CCTV cameras in their homes, shops, vehicles and business premises. It is no longer a luxury but a necessity for security,” he said.

Justice Aigbona also called on the Edo State Government to encourage residents to install CCTV cameras through public enlightenment campaigns and, where possible, provide incentives to support the initiative.
