Dr. Festus Alenkhe, the outgoing Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has officially launched his re-election campaign for a second term.

The event, held on Wednesday at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City, was a vibrant affair attended by elders of the Union and leaders from the Council’s 15 chapels.

Alenkhe, a prominent journalist with the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), had earlier obtained his nomination form from the NUJ Credentials Committee. In his address, he outlined the progress made during his first term and expressed a deep commitment to further advancing the Union if re-elected.

Reflecting on the state of the Press Centre when he assumed office in 2021, Dr. Alenkhe said,

“When I came in here in 2021, people knew how this place was. The accommodation we now enjoy was a far cry from the deplorable conditions we found then. Since I took office, we have repainted this building three times. By the time I leave in 2027, people will know that real change has taken place here.”

Dr. Alenkhe stressed his dedication to the Union’s development, citing his vast network and experiences as a seasoned broadcaster as a key resource.

“As a broadcaster, I have traveled across Nigeria and beyond. I used the contacts I built over the years to put things in place at the NUJ. Leadership is not something you give yourself; it’s something you’re born with,” he said.

His primary ambition, he noted, is to ensure the Union continues on a progressive path, with a capable vice-chairman by his side.

Addressing concerns about the on-going Vice-chairman race, he called on NUJ members to choose wisely, saying, “I am praying that God gives me a good Vice-chairman. Voters, it’s up to you to choose the best among them. Let’s not focus on rumours—both candidates are capable, and I am ready to work with whoever emerge victorious.”

Dr. Alenkhe also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the outgoing Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his continuous support of the Union.

During the event, Dr. Alenkhe proudly presented his prestigious Doctoral Fellowship award from the Institute of Public Sector Management (IPSM) in the United Kingdom, which he recently received.

A veteran in the field, Dr. Alenkhe’s leadership journey began during his days as a student leader at the College of Education, Ekiadolor.

Over the years, he has held various leadership roles, including Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria and Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross, Edo State Branch. His journalistic career has earned him numerous accolades, particularly for his work in crime reporting, where he has exposed hidden atrocities and won the admiration of many.
