The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a suspect in connection with the murder of an Uber driver, Usman Umaru, in Lagos.
The arrest was made during a joint operation by the Safer Highway and Okpella Division.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Moses Joel Yamu, disclosed in a statement on Sunday, October 20, 2024, that the suspect, identified as John Ochekwu Abraham, and his accomplice, known by the aliases “Ahua” or “Soldier,” had carjacked Umaru’s Toyota Camry at gunpoint, which tragically led to the driver’s death.
Abraham was arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation, where law enforcement discovered an AK-47 rifle and a magazine loaded with 18 rounds of ammunition, concealed within the vehicle’s engine compartment.
The stolen Toyota Camry, bearing registration number BDG 17 JK, was also recovered.
According to the police, “Ahua,” the other suspect involved in the crime, managed to flee the scene during the search, leaving Abraham behind. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to track down the fugitive.
The Edo State Police Command has urged the public to continue providing useful information that could assist in apprehending the suspect still at large.
In his statement, SP Yamu praised the quick and effective action of the officers involved in the arrest and recovery of the stolen items.
“The command remains committed to ensuring the safety of the public and is available for contact through the following distress and complaints lines: In Distress: 08077773721, 08037646272. Complaints: 08150999335,” Yamu concluded.
