The Edo State Government has commenced an investigation into a property allegedly owned by the late former governor of the defunct Bendel State, Prof. Ambrose Alli.
The property, located along Uwasota Road in Egor Local Government Area, is currently occupied by a private school. Over the years, several individuals have laid claim to its ownership, prompting the state government to step in.
Residents of the area gave different accounts of how the estate came about. While some claimed it was built by one of the contractors who worked for the Alli administration as compensation to the former governor, they said the ownership was never properly documented. Others alleged that the property belonged to a late personal assistant to Prof. Alli, who never moved his family into the house before the former governor was removed from office and later imprisoned.
Chairman of the Edo State Public Property Protection Committee, Eugene Okoloise, visited the property for an on-the-spot assessment. He said the committee had repeatedly invited those claiming ownership of the estate to provide evidence to support their claims, but they had failed to appear.
Okoloise added that the committee gathered information indicating that the late Prof. Alli visited the property during his lifetime and even constructed the access road leading to it.
He said the committee would submit its findings to Governor Monday Okpebholo, who would take the final decision on the matter.
Prof. Ambrose Alli served as governor of the defunct Bendel State from 1979 to 1983. Following his defeat in the 1983 governorship election, he returned to his family home. After the military takeover that same year, he was arrested and later sentenced by a military tribunal over the alleged misappropriation of N983,000 meant for a road project.
He regained his freedom before his death in 1989 after the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, paid the fine imposed on him by the government.
