The Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, has condemned the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for politicising the recent killing of travellers in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area. He emphasised that Governor Monday Okpebholo remains committed to fostering peace, unity, and security in the State.

In a statement issued in Benin City, Hon. Ohonbamu reaffirmed the Governor’s strong condemnation of the tragic incident, describing the perpetrators’ actions as unacceptable. He further stated that Governor Okpebholo had immediately ordered security agencies to track down those responsible and ensure they face justice.

“When the Governor received news of the incident at night, he travelled from Abuja to Uromi the following morning, personally instructing security agencies to take swift action in bringing the culprits to book,” the Commissioner stated.

Following the tragedy, Governor Okpebholo also travelled to Kano, where the victims originated, to meet with the State’s Governor and the bereaved families. According to Ohonbamu, this gesture underscored the Governor’s deep concern and proactive approach during this challenging period.

He criticised the PDP’s Caretaker Committee Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, for attempting to link the attack to a deteriorating security situation in Edo. “This assertion is both unfortunate and misleading. The heinous actions of these criminals have outraged every well-meaning Nigerian, and the Governor has taken decisive steps to ensure justice is served,” Ohonbamu stated.

The Commissioner noted that, as part of the response, the Governor had suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP. Friday Ibadin (Retd.), to facilitate an impartial investigation. “Governor Okpebholo’s efforts to restructure the state’s security architecture should be acknowledged rather than exploited for political gain,” he added.

Highlighting the Governor’s commitment to enhancing security, Ohonbamu pointed out that brand-new vehicles and motorcycles had been procured for security agencies across the state’s three senatorial districts. “Unlike the previous administration, which failed to prioritise security for eight years, Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated a clear dedication to protecting the lives and property of Edo residents,” he said.

Ohonbamu described as “laughable” the PDP’s sudden advocacy for improved security, arguing that their past governance failures had contributed to the current security challenges in the state. “It is ironic that the PDP, which failed to ensure safety during its tenure, now seeks to play the role of security advocate,” he remarked.

He further alleged that the previous PDP-led administration mismanaged security funds, failing to prevent crises. “The insecurity and violence in Edo today are remnants of the PDP’s governance failures. They lack the moral standing to call for a security summit,” Ohonbamu concluded.
