The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has commended the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, describing his leadership as divinely ordained to steer the state towards progress and transformation.

Speaking on Saturday at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio praised Okpebholoโ€™s early strides in office, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver on the expectations of the people.

Akpabio, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom, welcomed Senator Okpebholo, who won the governorship election under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 291,667 votes, defeating the Peopleโ€™s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,234 votes.

Highlighting the governorโ€™s track record, Akpabio remarked: “Every leadership comes from God, and He has chosen you to lead Edo State at this critical time. The people of Edo have not misplaced their trust in you. Your commitment and actions reflect a leader with the heart of the common man.”

Akpabio also applauded the governorโ€™s accomplishments within his first month in office, noting that his administration had already inspired hope among Edo residents. He emphasised that Okpebholoโ€™s alignment with the APC-led federal government presented significant opportunities for Edo State and the South-South region.

“Edo State is now better positioned to benefit from stronger ties with the government at the centre. This alignment strengthens the voice of the South-South region at the federal level, ensuring greater representation and influence in national affairs,” Akpabio said.

Reflecting on the regionโ€™s historical contributions to Nigeria, Akpabio acknowledged the South-Southโ€™s role as a critical economic hub. He pointed out the necessity of forging closer ties with the federal government to maximise developmental gains for the region, particularly in a minority-dominated area like the Niger Delta.

Governor Okpebholo, in his remarks, stated that his visit to Akwa Ibom was an opportunity to learn from Akpabioโ€™s vast experience and seek guidance. “I have come to draw from the wisdom of my leader and learn from the remarkable transformation Akwa Ibom has witnessed under his leadership,” Okpebholo said.

With the Senate Presidentโ€™s endorsement and the governorโ€™s proactive approach, Edo State appears poised for significant progress under its new administration.
