The Acting Vice Chancellor of Edo State University Uzairue, Prof. Dawood Omolumen Egbefo, has stressed the importance of patriotic commitment in improving work attitudes within Nigeria’s public sector.
He noted that a lack of such commitment contributes to poor performance, particularly in public institutions, where staff often view their workplaces as disconnected from their personal goals.
Prof. Egbefo made these remarks during the opening of a workshop aimed at enhancing the skills of non-academic staff to align with 21st-century university administration standards.
He highlighted the university’s continuous efforts to invest in staff development, stressing that such initiatives are crucial for ensuring effective service delivery.
The Acting Vice Chancellor reflected on Nigeria’s social history, noting that negative attitudes and dysfunctional habits have been longstanding obstacles to national development.
He stated: “The only way to address this degeneration is through continuous training and retraining of staff, particularly those in key administrative positions.”
In his address, Prof. Egbefo paid tribute to the former Vice Chancellor, Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, for elevating Edo State University Uzairue to world-class status.
However, he warned that even the most competent leadership could falter without a collective effort from the staff to embrace the university’s vision.
He urged the Directorate of Professional Training and Development to lead the charge in reshaping staff attitudes through frequent and targeted training sessions.
Assuring the university community of his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, Prof. Egbefo called for a renewed dedication to service, stressing the need for positive norms and professional conduct that would uphold the university’s growing reputation.
Dr. Anthony Iyoha, the Acting Director of Professional Training and Development, also spoke at the event.
He expressed gratitude to the Acting Vice Chancellor for his swift responses to staff needs and lauded the workshop’s potential to enhance non-academic staff’s professional capabilities.
Former Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Isoken Ogboro, delivered a lecture on the role of communication and proper documentation in effective university service delivery.
She stressed that the efficiency of any university system is often reflected in the quality and timeliness of its administrative performance.
Other key presentations at the workshop included lectures from the University Registrar, Mr. Habib Ekhalefo, on the role of faculty officers, and from the University Bursar, Dr. Osagie Osifo, on financial administration.
Mrs. Agnes Umeadi, Senior Assistant Registrar also provided insights on addressing administrative shortcomings and fostering a culture of constructive problem-solving.
The event follows a similar workshop previously held for academic staff, which focused on modern teaching techniques in line with 21st-century educational standards.
