The Edo State government’s transition process has hit a significant obstacle as members of the transition committee appointed by the incoming Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, failed to attend a crucial meeting.
The session was meant to facilitate a seamless handover between the outgoing administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki and the new government.
Initially slated for Monday at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City, the meeting was rescheduled for 8:00 am on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
Members of the outgoing government, including the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Joseph Eboigbe, arrived promptly. Despite their presence and the anticipation of a collaborative session, the team from the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Governor-elect Okpebholo was conspicuously absent.
By 1:00 pm, after several hours of waiting, the Obaseki-led team and accompanying journalists left the venue, marking a major setback in the handover process.
The transition committee was established to ensure the smooth transfer of governance ahead of the November 12, 2024, inauguration of the new administration.
The absence of Okpebholo’s team raises concerns about potential challenges in the final weeks of the transition.
