In a demonstration of commitment to women’s empowerment and political participation, a delegation of Edo Women Senior Citizens recently paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Barrister Olabisi Idaomi. The meeting, held in Benin City, provided a platform for discussions on the role of elderly women in shaping the socio-political landscape of Edo State.
The delegation, led by Evangelist Mrs. Rosemary Elawure, President of Edo Women Senior Citizens, commended the Commissioner for her relentless efforts in championing women’s development and social inclusion. Expressing their appreciation, the senior citizens acknowledged her dedication to advocating for the rights and welfare of women across the State.
Addressing the delegation, Chief Idaomi urged the senior citizens to remain proactive and diligent in their various capacities, emphasising that age should never be a barrier to meaningful contributions to society. Drawing from her own experiences, she underscored the significance of courage and active political engagement. She declared her unwavering commitment to democracy, affirming that even at the age of 90, she would continue to exercise her right to vote and defend her electoral choices.
In a passionate address, the Commissioner reiterated the need for unity among women, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential elections. She called for greater involvement of women in political decision-making processes, stressing that collective action was essential for amplifying their voices and achieving equitable representation in governance.
Chief Idaomi extended her gratitude to Mrs. Edesili Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, for her invaluable contributions to the advancement of women in Edo State. She praised Mrs. Anani’s intelligence and unwavering support in fostering initiatives that empower women and promote their socio-economic growth.
The visit concluded with renewed commitments from both the Commissioner and the senior citizens to continue working towards a more inclusive and politically engaged society for women in Edo State.
