Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has revealed that emerging facts indicate Ekene Agala, the man brutally beaten by a mob and security operatives over an alleged N2 million theft in Enugu State, may be innocent.
The development comes days after a disturbing video of the victim with a severely swollen face went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation over the brutal assault.
Contrary to earlier reports circulating online, Gwamnishu clarified that the incident occurred in Enugu State.
In the viral footage, Agala repeatedly maintained his innocence, swearing on the graves of his late parents that he did not steal the money. He also challenged his accusers to produce the CCTV footage they allegedly claimed captured him committing the theft.
Providing an update on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Gwamnishu shared before-and-after photographs of Agala and said fresh findings have cast serious doubt on the allegation against him.
He described the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers of rushing to judgment without credible evidence.
According to the activist, the woman who accused Agala has now reportedly admitted that no CCTV footage of the alleged theft exists, claiming instead that a little child allegedly witnessed him taking the money.
