Three siblings transporting the remains of their late mother from Abuja to Benue State for burial have reportedly been abducted by suspected gunmen in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were said to be conveying their mother’s body to Iklenyi community in Okpokwu Local Government Area when they were ambushed in the early hours of Saturday, July 18, along the Ogobia–Otukpo Road, between Omutele and Ankpechi villages in Oglewu District.
Residents said they were awakened by gunshots between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., forcing many people to flee the area for fear of further attacks.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the family’s vehicle had earlier developed a mechanical fault, leaving the occupants stranded until about 2:00 a.m. The siblings reportedly resumed their journey after the vehicle was fixed but ran into the armed men, who abducted them.
The whereabouts of the victims remain unknown, while the body of their deceased mother was reportedly left at the scene.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, said he was heading to the scene to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“Yes, I’m going to the scene now to ascertain what really happened,” Adole said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command had not officially confirmed the abduction. Efforts to obtain comments from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful, as calls and a text message sent to her were not answered.
The latest incident adds to growing security concerns along major highways in Benue State, where travellers have repeatedly fallen victim to armed attacks and kidnappings. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
