Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed confidence in his leadership during his time in office, stating that he did everything necessary for the country.
Speaking at a recent lecture in Lagos, Obasanjo emphasised his efforts to manage Nigeria’s complex economic challenges during his presidency from 1999 to 2007.
“When I was there, I did everything I should do for Nigeria and I can beat my chest and say that,” Obasanjo said, reflecting on his role as the nation’s leader.
He highlighted the difficult financial situation he inherited, with only N3.7 billion in reserves and N3.5 billion spent annually to service the country’s debt. To address this, he pursued debt relief, ultimately securing significant debt forgiveness for Nigeria.
“We got relief from a quantum debt of N3.36 billion,” Obasanjo explained, adding that by the time he left office, Nigeria had accumulated over N25 billion in excess crude savings and held reserves exceeding N45 billion.
Obasanjo further stressed that while Nigeria is a complex country, it is not difficult to manage, provided leaders are honest with themselves, the nation, and God.
His comments come amid ongoing debates about governance in Nigeria and the country’s current economic challenges.
