The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has taken action to support the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) in Edo State by donating insecticides and knapsack sprayers aimed at curbing the tick infestation in dog kennels.
The donation was made on Friday during the NVMA’s monthly meeting in Benin City, Edo State.
Dr. Samuel Owoicho, the State Coordinator for the ministry, spearheaded the event, explaining that the gesture aligns with the ministry’s mission to improve animal health and control tick-borne diseases.
He stressed the detrimental impact ticks can have on animal welfare and the livestock sector and called for sustained collaboration between the ministry and veterinary professionals.
Owoicho highlighted that ticks not only affect the health of dogs but also pose broader risks to the livestock industry, affecting productivity and disease control. He affirmed the government’s dedication to backing the veterinary association’s efforts through various initiatives, including disease control measures.
In addition to the donated equipment, Owoicho mentioned the ministry’s previous support for the NVMA, which included providing human and animal anti-rabies vaccines, Android phones for data collection, and capacity-building programs for veterinary professionals. “Our goal is to promote animal health and welfare, and enhance disease surveillance across the state,” Owoicho stated.
Dr. Daniel Asemota, Chairman of the Edo chapter of NVMA, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, noting that the tools provided will be instrumental in the fight against ticks.
He emphasised that this support would significantly improve conditions in dog kennels, benefiting pet owners and the veterinary community alike.
The initiative is part of a broader government strategy to boost animal health and control diseases, ensuring a more sustainable and productive livestock industry in Nigeria.
