The Federal Government has approved an 82 per cent increase in the registration fee for the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO), raising the cost to ₦50,000 per candidate from 2027.
The approval was conveyed in a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and signed by the Director of the Senior Secondary Education Department, Adeniji Ibrahim, on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Education.
According to the ministry, the decision followed a request by WAEC for an upward review of examination fees for school candidates beginning in 2027.
The circular recalled that during a meeting with examination bodies held on March 31, 202, the Minister of Education directed both WAEC and NECO to adopt a uniform registration fee for the conduct of their Senior School Certificate Examinations.
Following the directive, the minister approved ₦50,000 as the new examination fee per candidate, with effect from the 2027 NECO SSCE (Internal). The harmonised fee is also expected to apply to WAEC’s SSCE for school candidates.
The ministry directed that the new fee be communicated to all relevant stakeholders ahead of its implementation.
The increase represents one of the most significant revisions to SSCE registration fees in recent years and is expected to have far-reaching implications for parents, students and school proprietors as preparations begin for the 2027 examination cycle.
