The Federal Government has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing far-reaching changes that will see the scheme headed by a civilian, its uniform redesigned, and orientation camps extended as part of efforts to reposition the programme for national development.
The landmark reforms were approved on Monday by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja, marking the first comprehensive restructuring of the NYSC since its establishment 53 years ago.
Under the new framework, the NYSC will transition to a civilian-led administration, ending decades of military leadership. However, the military will continue to provide security for corps members across the country.
To pave the way for the implementation of the reforms, the FEC directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations.
Announcing the development via his X account, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described the reforms as the first holistic review of the scheme in its history.
“We are transforming the Scheme into a platform that not only unites Nigeria but also equips our young people with the skills, experience and opportunities they need to thrive in a fast-changing world,” the minister stated.
A major highlight of the reforms is the proposed extension of the orientation camp from the current three weeks to six weeks, with greater emphasis on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital literacy and career advancement.
The government also approved the introduction of a technology-driven call-up system to improve mobilisation and eliminate deployment bottlenecks, alongside a risk-sensitive deployment policy aimed at enhancing the safety and security of corps members.
In another significant shift, corps members will now be posted based on their academic qualifications and career aspirations, replacing the existing system with a skills-based deployment model designed to improve productivity and professional development.
The reforms further provide for a national grading and certification system for orientation camps to improve standards nationwide.
As part of efforts to modernise the scheme’s identity, the Federal Government also approved a redesigned NYSC uniform to promote professionalism and strengthen national pride among corps members.
In addition, the traditional Passing Out Parade (POP), which has long marked the completion of national service, will be replaced with a graduation ceremony.
Further details obtained by this online newspaper indicate that the reforms are designed to transform the NYSC into a more practical, skills-oriented and productivity-driven institution, aligning the scheme with the Federal Government’s broader economic and youth empowerment agenda.
