The Federal Government has restated its commitment to partnering with the Edo State Government to develop the state’s tourism sector and maximise its rich cultural and historical resources for economic growth.
The Director-General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), Dr. Ola Awakan, made this known on Monday in Benin City during the opening ceremony of the Edo Tourism Summit, Exhibition, and Fashion Show organised by the Edo Tourism Agency.
Awakan said Edo State is blessed with numerous tourism assets, including historical landmarks, cultural heritage, festivals, traditional arts and crafts, and natural attractions, which can only be fully developed through collaboration between government, private investors, and other stakeholders.
He explained that tourism plays a major role globally by creating employment opportunities, attracting foreign exchange, supporting infrastructure growth, preserving culture, and empowering communities. He added that Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity can help improve the country’s image internationally.
According to him, Nigeria should not be identified only by security challenges, but by its people’s rich traditions, culture, and creative achievements.
Awakan expressed hope that the summit would provide practical ideas and strategies that would support the sustainable growth of tourism in Edo State.
The Director-General of the Edo Tourism Agency, Mrs. Vivian Elabor, described the event as a platform bringing together investors, tourists, cultural ambassadors, and stakeholders to explore ways of unlocking the state’s tourism opportunities.
She noted that Edo has remained a significant destination for culture, heritage, and investment because of its historical importance, festivals, and natural attractions. Elabor also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for supporting tourism development through the SHINE Agenda and encouraged investors to explore opportunities in the state.
The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Mr. Musa Ikhilor, called for the digitisation and wider promotion of Edo’s tourism assets to increase their visibility and economic benefits.
He urged residents to play their part by promoting the state’s historical sites, culture, and attractions as tourism ambassadors.
The summit is expected to encourage partnerships, attract investments, and generate new ideas that will help position Edo State as a major tourism destination in Nigeria while supporting job creation and sustainable development.
