The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Benin Zone, has threatened to embark on a total and indefinite strike across seven state-owned universities in Edo, Ondo, and Delta States over the alleged failure of the governments and university authorities to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.
The universities affected include Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Delta State University, Abraka; University of Delta, Agbor; Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba; and Southern Delta University, Ozoro.
The Benin Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Benin City, where he accused the governments of Edo, Ondo, and Delta States of failing to fulfill their obligations under the agreement.
He explained that the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement, which was unveiled by the Federal Government on January 14, 2026, was expected to bring an end to years of disagreements over the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and promote lasting peace in the nation’s public universities.
According to Igbafen, the Federal Government had directed state governments and visitors to state universities to ensure full implementation of the agreement. He, however, said that while federal universities and some state-owned institutions across the country had complied, none of the universities within the Benin Zone had implemented the agreement.
He described the situation as unfair to lecturers in the affected institutions, accusing the state governments of failing to provide the necessary financial support needed for the implementation.
The union leader said members had waited for six months for action but had received no meaningful response, leading to the commencement of mobilisation for a comprehensive and indefinite strike.
ASUU is demanding that the next salary payments of its members should include the Cost of Academic Training Allowance (CATA) and other approved allowances, while all outstanding arrears from January 2026 should be paid in full.
The union warned that any further delay by the governments of Edo, Ondo, and Delta States would lead to a complete shutdown of academic activities in the affected universities.
