In a major step toward modernizing policing and reducing the impact of rising fuel costs, the Federal Government has donated three large buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The initiative, which comes through the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPF-TF) and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV), was officially presented on Wednesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed appreciation for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the development as a visionary reform.

He said the shift to gas and electric energy represents a key step in aligning the Nigeria Police with global best practices.

“These vehicles will be used to improve officers’ welfare and ease mobility during security operations,” he said.

The Force also plans to establish local vehicle conversion centres for maintenance and adaptation of police vehicles to alternative energy systems.

Leaders of both agencies, led by the Secretary of the NPF-TF, Mohammad Sheidu, and the Head of PI-CNG & EV, Barrister Ismail Ahmed (OON), described the initiative as a pilot phase of a broader national programme.

“This is part of the Federal Government’s major plan to convert all police operational vehicles to CNG. It will reduce fuel expenditure by about 50% or more,” they stated.

The move is expected to boost the operational capacity of the police in safeguarding lives and property across Nigeria in this new era.
