World football governing body, FIFA, has confirmed that Nigerian football icon Austin Jay-Jay Okocha holds the record for the most successful dribbles completed in a single FIFA World Cup match, further cementing his place among the greatest entertainers the game has ever produced.
According to FIFA, Okocha set the historic record during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, where he completed an astonishing 15 successful dribbles from 16 attempts against one of the most feared defensive teams in world football.
On July 5, 1994, the then 20-year-old Nigerian midfielder delivered a breathtaking display of skill, flair and confidence at the Foxboro Stadium, tormenting Italian defenders with dazzling body feints, quick turns and fearless attacking runs.
The record-breaking performance came against an Italian side packed with defensive stars, including Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Demetrio Albertini, yet Okocha repeatedly danced past them in what remains one of the most memorable individual displays in World Cup history.
