The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended Darius Ishaku, the former governor of Taraba State, on allegations of a N27 billion fraud.
The arrest reportedly took place early Friday morning at his residence in Abuja.
Sources close to the EFCC revealed that the former governor, who completed his two-term tenure in 2023, is currently being held by the anti-graft agency. According to an insider, a total of 15-count charges have been prepared against Ishaku, and his arraignment in court is imminent, with substantial evidence already gathered against him.
“We have been investigating him since he left office, and there is a significant amount of financial mismanagement tied to his administration,” said a source within the EFCC.
The ex-governor was allegedly unable to provide satisfactory responses to the commission’s inquiries into various instances of financial misconduct that occurred during his time in office, prompting his detention.
The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest but declined to offer additional details on the on-going investigation.
Ishaku’s arrest adds to the growing list of former state governors under EFCC scrutiny, coming shortly after similar allegations were made against the ex-governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, who faces accusations of misappropriating N80.2 billion.
