Federal civil servants across Nigeria will start receiving the newly approved minimum wage from Thursday, September 26, 2024, according to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, the Spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant-General, Bawa Mokwa, confirmed that workers would begin to receive payment alerts reflecting the new minimum wage. However, Mokwa did not clarify whether the payment would include arrears.
“Federal Government civil servants will start getting the new minimum wage from today, this September 2024,” he stated. “What I can tell you is that the minimum wage salary payment is today; I am not sure about the arrears.”
This announcement follows the recent confirmation by the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, who revealed on Tuesday that the government had approved an upward review of the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) in line with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act, 2024.
The new minimum wage of N70,000 was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on July 18, 2024, and subsequently passed into law by the Senate.
The revision marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to address the rising cost of living and improve the welfare of its workers, with many eagerly awaiting further details on arrears and full implementation.
