The importance of sound leadership as a driver of national development was brought to the fore during the launch of the book: “Dialogue with My Fellow Old Boys” by HRH Ogiefo Festus Iduozee, JP, the Enogie of Evboesi.
The event was part of the 80th Anniversary celebration of the Immaculate Conception College Benin Old Boys Association (ICCOBA) Worldwide in Edo State.
Renowned scholar and former lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Prof. Dan Enobakhare, who reviewed the book, emphasised the urgent need for visionary leadership in Nigeria. He highlighted that no nation could progress beyond the quality of its leaders, regardless of its natural resources.
“Sound leadership is a prerequisite for sustainable development,” Prof. Enobakhare said while discussing the book’s chapter, “Policy Reforms in a Globalised Economy: Which Way Nigeria?” He criticised Nigeria’s inability to emulate the institutional diligence of countries thriving in the global economy.
In his remarks, the author, HRH Ogiefo Festus Iduozee, echoed this sentiment. “A nation’s growth depends on leaders with clarity of vision and core values,” he stated. He called for a governance model focused on human development, good management, and strategic adaptation to globalization challenges.
HRH Iduozee also expressed concern about Nigeria’s high unemployment, widespread poverty, and decaying infrastructure. He warned against blindly following policy prescriptions from international financial institutions, citing China’s selective approach as a model to emulate.
Chief D.O. Odigie, Chairman of the event, praised the book for its relevance and inspirational content. “This book is not just for adults; it’s a guide for the younger generation as well,” he said, urging attendees to acquire copies.
Engr. Ighodalo Edetanlen, President of ICCOBA Worldwide, lauded HRH Iduozee for his commitment to the association and for authoring a work that serves as both a call to action and a source of wisdom for Nigerians.
The book launch was a highlight of ICCOBA’s anniversary celebration, reinforcing the association’s dedication to fostering excellence and leadership within its community and beyond.
