University of Benin Inducts Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, Other Distinguished Nigerians into Faculty Hall of Fame

The Faculty of Management Sciences at the University of Benin celebrated a prestigious occasion as it inducted notable Nigerians, including Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, into its Hall of Fame.

This event, part of the Faculty’s 2024 International Annual Conference, took place in the iconic Prof. Festus Iyayi Hall and gathered an esteemed audience of academics, government officials, students, and professionals from diverse fields.

Dr. Umakhihe, a respected public servant and former federal Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, was recognised with an Award of Merit for his pivotal contributions to Nigeria’s agricultural sector and his enduring commitment to public service.

Dr. Umakhihe, an alumnus of the University of Benin, has been celebrated as a paragon of excellence and dedication.
Throughout his career, he has significantly advanced Nigeria’s food security initiatives through policy reforms and programs aimed at supporting the nation’s agricultural framework.

His award was accepted on his behalf by Mr. Raymond Imoudu, who conveyed Dr. Umakhihe’s deep appreciation to the Faculty for the honor, describing it as both humbling and motivating.

“This recognition serves as a significant honor for Dr. Umakhihe, whose career has been defined by a passion for public service and a commitment to making impactful contributions to Nigeria’s development, particularly in the area of agriculture and food security,” Imoudu remarked.

Dr. Umakhihe’s legacy in agriculture has been marked by reforms designed to boost food production and support farmers across Nigeria.

His work in fostering partnerships with local and international organisations and his role in steering crucial programs have underscored his vision for sustainable agricultural policies that benefit communities nationwide.

The Faculty of Management Sciences also honored other distinguished Nigerians: Mr. Reginald Bayoko, Head of Service of Delta State; Mr. John Osagie Inegbedion, Chairman of the Edo State Board of Internal Revenue; and Mr. Festus Alenkhe, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State Chapter, all of whom have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service in their respective fields.

The induction ceremony took place within the framework of the 2024 International Annual Conference, whose theme, “Disruptive Technologies for Sustainable Development and Accountability,” emphasised the critical role that technological advancements play in addressing pressing global issues.

Dean of the Faculty, Professor Samson Osemwegie, delivered the keynote, urging Nigeria to harness technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain to foster economic development, sustainability, and transparency.
“Disruptive technologies are reshaping industries and creating new opportunities for development.

However, with this transformation comes the responsibility to ensure that these technologies are used to promote equity, sustainability, and accountability,” Professor Osemwegie asserted.

The conference featured vibrant panel discussions, workshops, and paper presentations on topics such as the role of artificial intelligence in public services and leveraging technology to improve governance.

Participants engaged in conversations about the potential of emerging technologies to drive innovation and address some of Nigeria’s most significant development challenges.
