The ancient Opobo Kingdom in Rivers State came alive on Saturday, September 26, 2026, as dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders and captains of industry gathered for the historic coronation of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas Mac-Pepple Jaja, Jeki VI.
The epoch-making ceremony, held at the Palace in Opobo Town, attracted Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and prominent traditional rulers from across Nigeria.
Represented by his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, Governor Fubara charged King Jaja VI and other traditional rulers to remain steadfast custodians of the people’s heritage while serving as partners in peace, stability and development.
Fubara described the coronation as a celebration of Opobo Kingdom’s rich history, culture and enduring heritage, stressing that the traditions of the kingdom remain an important part of Rivers State and Nigeria’s cultural identity.
He urged traditional institutions to ensure that these values are preserved and transmitted to future generations, while praying for wisdom, unity and progress throughout the reign of King Jaja VI.
Former President Jonathan, in his goodwill message, congratulated the new monarch and expressed confidence that his reign would usher in peace, unity and development across Opobo Kingdom.
Jonathan also highlighted the enduring global legacy of the late King Jaja of Opobo, noting that the revered monarch’s name and image continue to command respect beyond Nigeria’s shores.
In his coronation address, the new monarch paid tribute to the founder of Opobo Kingdom, King Jaja of Opobo, whom he described as a courageous strategist and statesman who transformed Opobo into a major commercial hub.
King Jaja VI called on his subjects to draw inspiration from the courage, vision and enterprise of their forebears, while outlining his desire for partnerships that would advance the kingdom.
“Opobo Kingdom does not ask for charity, but partnership and equity,” the monarch declared.
Earlier, the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, highlighted the historic relationship between Onitsha and Opobo, describing the bond as one founded on trade, mutual respect and shared history.
The colourful ceremony reached its climax with the anointing and coronation of King Charles Douglas Mac-Pepple Jaja as Jeki VI by the Bishop of Niger Delta Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Oko-Jaja.
The coronation marks a significant moment in the history of Opobo Kingdom and ushers in a new chapter for one of Nigeria’s most historically prominent traditional institutions.
