The President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Maureen Chigbo, has encouraged members to remain committed to ethical journalism while exploring opportunities for growth in the digital media space.
Speaking at the Guild’s 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference, held at Reverton Hotel in Lokoja, Kogi State, Chigbo stressed the importance of integrity and entrepreneurship in the ever-evolving online media landscape.
In her opening remarks, Chigbo highlighted the necessity for online publishers to distinguish themselves as media entrepreneurs, or “mediapreneurs,” and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
“Online is the future of journalism,” Chigbo stated, adding that even traditional news outlets are shifting their focus to digital platforms.
“We must know we are mediapreneurs in the online media community.”
The AGM serves as a platform for members to rejuvenate their businesses while maintaining ethical standards.
Chigbo underscored the significance of peer learning and collaboration in capacity-building sessions designed to share best practices and business insights.
“We have brought in successful members to speak to others so that more people can thrive in the industry. This peer review is crucial for our collective growth,” she said.
Chigbo, who also publishes Relnews, praised GOCOP’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and announced plans to visit a local orphanage.
She urged members to incorporate CSR initiatives into their own businesses, stating, “We must put something aside each year to give back to society.”
The event also featured a detailed presentation by Dr. Maxwell Amuchie, Founder/CEO of Sundiata Post Media Ltd, who addressed the critical issue of revenue generation in online publishing.
In his session titled: “Low Hanging Fruits: A Revenue Strategy for Online Publishers, Dr. Amuchie identified key revenue streams such as sponsored posts, link insertions, text link adverts, and press releases.”
He also highlighted other significant revenue sources including banner advertisements, digital advertising, special project writing for State governments and agencies, events management, and syndication.
Dr. Amuchie urged GOCOP members to craft sustainable business strategies while maintaining the ethical standards of journalism.
“Despite the advice and guidance offered by GOCOP, it is up to each member to define their unique business models and create value that attracts patronage,” he said.
The gathering also allowed members to exchange ideas on how to generate revenue without compromising the integrity of their journalistic work.
Chigbo closed by thanking the members for their continued support and commended the government and people of Kogi State for hosting the event.
