Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid a condolence visit to the families of victims brutally murdered in the recent Uromi attack, some of whom hailed from Bankure Local Government Area in Kano State.
During his visit, Governor Okpebholo reassured the bereaved families that justice would be served and pledged his administration’s full commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
“The news of this incident deeply disturbed me. By 4 a.m., I left Abuja for Uromi to be with the affected families. During my campaign, your people stood by me, and today, I stand with you in grief. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of Kano State and pray for the souls of the victims,” Governor Okpebholo said.
Providing an update on the ongoing investigation, the Governor disclosed that security agencies had made considerable progress, with 14 suspects already in custody. He assured that further arrests would be made as investigations continue.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he added, had expressed deep concern over the tragedy and instructed law enforcement agencies to spare no effort in bringing the assailants to book.
In his response, the Governor of Kano State expressed appreciation for Governor Okpebholo’s swift intervention and support to the grieving families.
“We commend the Governor of Edo State for his prompt response to this tragic event. Many of the victims were returning from Port Harcourt when they were killed. Governor Okpebholo visited the scene, ensured proper handling of the corpses, and facilitated their burial. His commitment to supporting the affected families has been commendable, and we appreciate his assurance that the culprits will be held accountable,” he stated.
Speaking on behalf of the Arewa community in Edo State, Badamasi Sally stressed the longstanding peaceful relationship between the northern community and the people of Edo, urging that the tragic event should not be allowed to sow division.
“I was born and raised in Edo State, and we have always coexisted peacefully. This incident should not be used to damage the state’s reputation. The Edo State Government acted swiftly, and we acknowledge the role played by Uromi residents in rescuing some victims. This tragedy will not change the bond between our communities,” Sally remarked.
Similarly, Fred Akhigbe, leader of the Edo community in Kano, expressed gratitude for Governor Okpebholo’s visit, calling for continued peace and unity between both communities.
“This visit reassures us that both state governments are committed to justice and maintaining harmony. We grieve with the people of Kano State and pray for the souls of the departed. I have lived in Kano for 52 years, and I know that we are all one people,” he stated.
