Gov. Sule Ends LG-State Joint Account System, Pledges New Minimum Wage Implementation

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has announced the termination of the controversial joint account system between the state and its 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs). This decision aligns with a recent Supreme Court ruling that upholds financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 LGAs.

The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor on Public Affairs, Mr. Peter Ahemba, revealed the development on Tuesday in Lafia.

Ahemba stated that the decision reflects the Sule administration’s commitment to transparency and respect for the rule of law. “The governor’s action demonstrates his dedication to accountable governance. The joint account system had limited the financial independence of LGAs, but with its removal, local governments can pursue more developmental projects directly,” Ahemba noted.

Alongside this policy change, the governor’s office confirmed plans to implement the N70,000 minimum wage recently signed into law at the federal level.

Ahemba noted that Gov. Sule had intended to enforce the new wage back in August, with three months’ arrears, but agreed to a request from labor unions to prioritise promotions instead. Now that promotions have been completed, the government is prepared to initiate discussions on the minimum wage implementation.

The Sule administration continues to emphasise welfare and infrastructure investments, aiming to bolster agricultural output and alleviate poverty across Nasarawa State.

Ahemba assured residents that improving quality of life remains a top priority, with efforts underway to enhance both economic opportunities and public services.
