Abia State Governor Alex Otti has inaugurated 17 newly elected local government chairmen, urging them to prioritize tangible development in their respective areas within the next six months. The swearing-in ceremony, held on Monday, saw the chairmen take their oaths of office with a mandate to place the people of Abia first in all their decisions and actions.
Governor Otti stressed the importance of socio-economic transformation at the local level, urging the officials to focus on basic amenities that directly impact the well-being of residents.
He highlighted essential services, such as clean water access, basic healthcare, quality education, road maintenance, and local security improvements, as top priorities for the newly sworn-in chairmen.
“Our people should feel a noticeable impact of your leadership, especially in the lives of women, youth, and vulnerable groups in each locality,” Otti said, challenging the chairmen to make a measurable difference within their first half-year in office.
The new chairmen represent a mix of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), which won 15 of the seats, and the Young Progressives Party (YPP), which secured two positions. The Abia State Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) had previously presented the Certificates of Return to the chairmen on Sunday, officially recognising the newly elected leaders.

– Nnadozie Nwaogwugwu (Isialangwa South, ZLP)
– Chinedu Ekeke (Isukwuato, ZLP)
– Maxwell Nwadike (Obingwa, ZLP)
– Eleanya Oju-Kalu (Ohafia, ZLP)
– Chidi Christian Agu (Osisioma, YPP)
– Ihenacho Chiemela Nwagbara (Ugwunagbo, YPP)
– Chibunna Akara (Ukwa East, ZLP)
– Pastor Dike Nwankwo (Ukwa West, ZLP)
– Smart Ihuoma (Umuahia North, ZLP)
– Chinwendu Enwereuzo (Umuahia South, ZLP)
– Sunday Afuruike (Umunneochi, ZLP)
With these new leaders in place, the State government is optimistic about achieving significant local-level improvements, aligning with Otti’s vision for a progressive Abia.
