Edo State’s public service, Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered the immediate dissolution of all statutory commissions, boards, and parastatals, alongside terminating the appointments of all political appointees and permanent secretaries who were recruited from outside the state’s public or civil service.
This sweeping decision aims to pave the way for structural reforms and to streamline the functioning of the government.
The directive was conveyed in an official statement by Hon. Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, who emphasised the governor’s commitment to enhancing efficiency and accountability in public service operations.
“It is hereby announced for the information of the general public that the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has approved the dissolution of executives of all boards, agencies, and parastatals in the Edo State Public Service, with immediate effect,” read the statement.
Further, the statement clarified that all political appointees and externally appointed permanent secretaries are also relieved of their duties and are required to hand over government property in their custody to the most senior officers within their respective ministries, departments, and agencies.
This decision is anticipated to create opportunities for local professionals within the State’s civil service to step into leadership roles, aligning with Governor Okpebholo’s vision for a self-sufficient and home-grown governance structure in Edo State.
The governor has yet to announce replacements or outline additional restructuring plans, but sources close to Uptown Press suggest a focus on merit-based appointments from within the civil service ranks.
