The House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs has begun evaluating women empowerment programmes in Edo State as part of efforts to identify successful initiatives that can be replicated across the country.
The leader of the delegation, Hajia Aishetu Inusa, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, in Benin on Wednesday.
According to Inusa, the assessment includes inspections of skills acquisition centres, agricultural projects and other facilities dedicated to improving the welfare and economic empowerment of women. She explained that the exercise is part of activities marking the second edition of the “Jewels of Hope and Development in Nigeria”programme.
She said the nationwide assessment is aimed at identifying effective women-focused interventions and documenting best practices that can be adopted by other states.
A consultant to the delegation, Farouk Umah, noted that the exercise is not intended to criticise any state but to highlight programmes that have recorded positive results. He also thanked the Edo State Government for its support and warm reception throughout the visit.
Responding, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa assured the committee of the state’s full cooperation, saying the government would provide the necessary support to ensure the successful completion of the assessment.
He also praised the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development for her commitment to implementing programmes that promote the welfare and empowerment of women in the state.
The assessment is expected to strengthen efforts to improve women’s empowerment nationwide by showcasing successful initiatives already being implemented in Edo State.
