The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for robust support from stakeholders to ensure a seamless governorship election in Edo State.

At a press conference in Abuja, Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, assured the public of INEC’s commitment to conducting a smooth and transparent poll.

“We are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity for the Edo governorship election,” Olumekun stated.

He emphasised the importance of collaboration among all parties involved, including voters, media, and other stakeholders, to achieve a credible and efficient election process.

Olumekun provided a detailed update on preparations for the election, noting significant progress in several areas.
“The training of security personnel is complete, and from September 6 to 15, we will train our ad-hoc staff—Supervisory Presiding Officers, Presiding Officers, and Assistant Presiding Officers—right here in Edo State,” he said.

On September 10, 2024, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu will oversee a mock accreditation exercise to test the BVAS machines and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal. This will be followed by a crucial stakeholders meeting on September 11, where Prof. Yakubu will engage with the Police I.G. and other relevant figures in Benin City.

A key highlight of the pre-election period will be the signing of the Peace Accord by candidates on September 12, 2024, under the auspices of the National Peace Committee chaired by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retired).
