The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to deploy over 5,000 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, scheduled for September 21, 2024.
This move is part of the commission’s strategy to ensure a smooth and efficient electoral process across the state.
A senior INEC official, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the commission is intensifying efforts to guarantee a seamless election. “More than 5,000 BVAS devices will be deployed for the Edo State governorship election,” the official stated.
These devices will be distributed across the state’s 4,519 polling units and 211 collation centres, including 192 ward centres, 18 local government centres, and the state collation centre in Benin City.
To ensure the efficacy of these deployments, INEC has scheduled a mock voter accreditation exercise for September 10, 2024. This exercise will serve as a test run for both the BVAS devices and the electronic result upload process to the INEC Result Viewing portal.
The installation and configuration of the BVAS machines, intended for use on election day, have already been completed, signaling the commission’s readiness for the upcoming poll.
