The Edo State Government has raised alarm over the growing threat of insecurity in the State, which it attributes to armed thugs linked to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the government expressed deep concern that these individuals, who were heavily armed before the 2024 Edo Governorship Election, have refused to surrender their weapons. Their continued possession of illegal firearms is now endangering public safety.
The statement recalled a remark made by former Governor Godwin Obaseki before the election, where he allegedly declared that “Nigeria would burn.” According to the government, this was not mere rhetoric but a calculated statement tied to the systematic arming of political operatives.
Many of these armed individuals were reportedly integrated into the Edo State Security Network under the previous administration. Intelligence reports suggest they still possess over 5,000 illegal weapons, which are now being used for crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and violent attacks across the State.
The government accused PDP leaders of failing to assist security agencies in disarming these operatives. Instead, it alleges that they are shielding these criminals and may even be stockpiling additional arms to create unrest if their candidate, Asue Ighodalo, does not emerge victorious at the Tribunal.
In response, the Edo State Government has called on security agencies to intensify investigations and ensure that all those involved—both the armed criminals and their sponsors—are brought to justice.
Governor Monday Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring law and order in the state. He vowed that no individual, regardless of political ties, would be allowed to compromise the peace and security of Edo citizens.
“The safety and well-being of our people remain my utmost priority,” the Governor stated, urging security agencies to act swiftly in recovering illegal firearms and preventing politically motivated violence.
