The political landscape in Delta State witnessed a dramatic shake-up on Monday as the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, led 21 lawmakers in a mass defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development, which unfolded during the Assembly’s plenary session, marks a deepening crisis within the PDP, a party that has traditionally held sway in the state. Speaker Guwor formally announced the move, stating he had received letters from the affected legislators declaring their decision to abandon the PDP.
Explaining the rationale behind the switch, Guwor cited ongoing internal strife within the PDP’s South South Zonal Executive and broader issues plaguing the party’s national leadership. According to him, the decision was a unified one among the defecting lawmakers, borne out of frustration with the party’s worsening divisions.
The defection delivers a significant blow to the PDP’s dominance in Delta State and further bolsters the strength of the APC in the state legislature. With the majority now tipping in its favour, the APC is poised to wield considerable influence over future legislative decisions.
This mass exodus follows the earlier departure of high-profile figures such as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, both of whom have been linked to mounting dissatisfaction with the PDP’s direction.
