Tragedy struck in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, after an Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children, Malama Ummulkhairi, was lynched and her body set ablaze by a mob over a false allegation of child theft.
The horrific incident occurred on Saturday, June 21, 2026, after the victim reportedly became separated from her companions while attending an Islamic lecture in the area.
According to reports, Ummulkhairi was seeking directions and approached some local children for assistance when rumours began circulating that she was attempting to kidnap them.
As panic spread, residents apprehended her and handed her over to the police, who took her into protective custody while efforts were made to verify her identity and calm tensions.
Family members reportedly arrived at the station and attempted to explain the situation, insisting that the woman was innocent and had merely lost contact with her group.
However, the situation took a deadly turn when an enraged crowd stormed the police station, overwhelmed security personnel, dragged the woman out and brutally killed her before setting her body on fire.
The gruesome killing has sparked outrage, with many condemning the growing trend of jungle justice across the country.
Confirming the incident, the Kaduna State Police Command described the attack as a barbaric act of mob violence and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.
The command disclosed that several suspects had already been arrested in connection with the killing and assured the public that investigations were ongoing to ensure all perpetrators are prosecuted.
