Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo delighted attendees in Benin City on Wednesday as he danced with Benin cultural performers at the unveiling of the renovated Stella Obasanjo Hospital. The hospital, named in honour of his late wife, has recently been expanded and upgraded, now boasting 250 beds.
The 87-year-old former leader, known for his charismatic personality, surprised the crowd by dancing alongside a procession of cultural performers. His impromptu dance next to a stylish SUV caught the attention of social media users, who quickly shared clips of the moment.
The event drew several notable attendees, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife Dame Patience Jonathan, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy Obaseki, all of whom watched Obasanjo’s lively performance with delight.
In his remarks following the unveiling, Obasanjo highlighted the importance of prioritising healthcare across Nigeria. He stressed that medical facilities like the newly upgraded Stella Obasanjo Hospital could provide life-saving care, regardless of when or where accidents and health crises may occur.
Reflecting on Governor Obaseki’s term, Obasanjo praised his commitment to healthcare and other key initiatives, remarking, “He started well and is ending well.”
He further encouraged Obaseki’s successor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to continue supporting health services and insurance policies for Edo State residents.
The event not only celebrated the hospital’s transformation but also served as a reminder of the importance of accessible healthcare, a cause Obasanjo and Obaseki urged the next administration to uphold.
