During the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for random drug tests.
A source privy to the development told Uptown Press that, the tests were conducted twice in four games, against the hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon. Although the results of the tests have not been disclosed, Osimhen has been a standout player for Nigeria in the tournament so far.
He was involved in the penalty that secured a 1-0 win over Cote d’Ivoire and put in a notable performance against Cameroon, setting up the first goal and being a constant menace for the opposition. He was eventually replaced by Paul Onuachu late in the game.
“(He was) tested against Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon. That is twice in four games,” the source said.
Osimhen’s only goal in the tournament came in the 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their opening game. As the current CAF Player of the Year, he is expected to lead the line for Nigeria in their upcoming quarter-final match against Angola.
