Ethiopian long-distance runner Mamo Lama Alemu emerged victorious in the men’s elite category of the 2026 Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, finishing in an impressive time of 29 minutes and 37 seconds to claim the coveted $15,000 prize money.
The prestigious race, held on Saturday, May 30, in Okpekpe, Edo State, witnessed a dominant performance from Ethiopian athletes, who swept the top positions in both the men’s and women’s elite categories.
Alemu narrowly edged out fellow Ethiopian Arage Getehn, who crossed the finish line just two seconds later in 29 minutes and 39 seconds to secure second place and earn $8,000. Kenya’s Maxon Kipngetich finished third with a time of 29 minutes and 58 seconds, taking home $5,000.
In the women’s elite race, Ethiopia’s Silenet Bitwe produced a commanding display, clocking 34 minutes and 18 seconds to clinch the title and the $15,000 winner’s prize. Her compatriot, Mahait Kasahwu, finished a second behind in 34 minutes and 19 seconds to place second and receive $8,000, while Kenya’s Fridah Ndinda settled for third place in 34 minutes and 50 seconds, earning $5,000.
Among the Nigerian participants, Raymond Iliya Gyang emerged as the fastest local male runner, posting a time of 30 minutes and 29 seconds, while Patience Dalyop claimed the women’s Nigerian title after finishing in 36 minutes and 42 seconds.
The latest edition of the internationally acclaimed road race once again attracted elite athletes from across Africa, with Ethiopian runners reaffirming their dominance on the challenging Okpekpe course in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
