The Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Works and Transportation, Engr. Bashiru Bello, has described the security situation during the 2026 Osun State governorship election as peaceful and satisfactory.
Bello spoke with journalists shortly before casting his vote at his ward in Ede North Local Government Area of the state.
He commended the security agencies for their coordination, saying their presence had helped to maintain peace across the polling area.
“So far, so good. Everything is in order. The police and all the security agents are well coordinated. The process is going smoothly,” he said.
However, Bello raised concerns over the slow performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), attributing the delay to the large number of voters at the polling area.
According to him, voters had spent about three hours on the queue due to the limited capacity of the available BVAS machine.
“The number of people is more than the machine can efficiently handle. The efficiency of the machine is low compared to what we expected. Everybody has been on the queue for the past three hours,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider providing additional BVAS machines or splitting overcrowded polling units in subsequent elections to make accreditation faster and more efficient.
He expressed hope that the machines would not break down, noting that the prolonged process could become more difficult if the equipment failed.
Bello, however, said he was satisfied with the conduct of the election in his area, stressing that voters were freely choosing their preferred candidates without intimidation.
“There is no crisis anywhere. Everybody is feeling happy and relating to each other very well. All the parties have their representatives, and voters know they are voting for their preferred candidates,” he said.
“Nobody is intimidating anybody to vote for one party or the other. The arrangement is okay and satisfactory.”
He also expressed optimism that all eligible voters on the queue would be attended to, despite the initial delays caused by the BVAS equipment.
