President-elect Donald Trump has tapped former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to serve as the next U.S. Attorney General, replacing his initial pick, Matt Gaetz, who withdrew amid controversy.

The announcement, made on Thursday, November 21, 2024, marks Bondi’s return to a prominent national role. The 59-year-old previously served as Florida’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2019 and was a key ally to Trump during his first term, including her role on the Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission and as part of his defense team during his impeachment trial.

Bondi’s nomination follows Gaetz’s decision to step aside due to an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation. The inquiry centers on allegations of inappropriate conduct, including a relationship with a 17-year-old and drug use, accusations Gaetz has consistently denied.

Bondi, who helped spearhead the America First Policy Institute’s legal initiatives, is regarded as a seasoned prosecutor with significant experience. Her background starkly contrasts with Gaetz’s, whose nomination faced skepticism from both Democrats and some Republicans.

“She has a proven track record and the credentials necessary for this role,” said David Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor in Florida.

Trump praised Bondi’s history as Florida’s first female attorney general, lauding her tough stance on crime and her dedication to conservative values. “Pam is a fighter. She has the experience, the determination, and the integrity to lead the Department of Justice and restore its reputation,” he said in a statement.

Bondi’s confirmation process is expected to generate debate, given her close ties to Trump and her role in his past legal defenses. However, her extensive background in law enforcement may ease the path compared to her predecessor’s contentious nomination.

If confirmed, Bondi will oversee the Justice Department during a pivotal time, as Trump himself faces multiple legal challenges. Bondi has pledged to depoliticise the department, aligning with Trump’s vision of restoring what he calls “fairness” in federal prosecutions.
